Assesses archaeological features in Whinmoor, indicating historical field boundaries.
Trenches 1-57 were located within Phase I, all were located and levelled using a Trimble GPS Rover. All trenches measured 37.5m in length. The trenches were positioned to assess anomalies highlighted in the results of the Geophysical Survey in addition to areas of uncertainty which were beyond the scope of geophysical surveying. Areas thought to be devoid of archaeological activity were also examined. Once positioned the trenches were excavated using a tracked 360 mechanical excavator, fitted with a wide toothless bucket operating under close archaeological supervision. In each trench, soils were removed down to a perceived archaeological horizon. The exposed surfaces were cleaned appropriately, and any subsequent excavation was carried out by hand. The result of this Phase I Evaluation confirmed the conclusions drawn from the Geophysical Survey, with excavated features relating to the field boundaries depicted on late 19th and early 20th Ordnance Survey mapping.
