Archaeological strip, map, and record uncovers Bronze Age and medieval features, revealing settlement history.
An Archaeological Strip, Map and Record was carried out by MAP Archaeological Practice Ltd on land off Langton Road, Norton, North Yorkshire between August and October 2018, The earliest feature on the site consisted of a single round barrow of presumed Bronze Age date, although no interment or associated artefacts were present to confirm this date. Disarticulated human remains were identified close to the barrow suggesting they had been disturbed, possibly by later agricultural activity. Residual Prehistoric flint artefacts was also found across the site. The eastern limits of the Deserted Medieval Village of Sutton fall within the site. The village had Pre-conquest origins, represented by eight Sunken Floored Buildings and Pre-conquest pottery suggesting a disperse, open settlement. The focus of the village during the Medieval village was located to the west of the site although the remains of the footings of a Medieval building were identified, close to a trackway which ran along the majority of the northern limit of excavation. The majority of the site appears to have been utilised for predominantly arable agricultural practices although it is likely that livestock was managed in areas close to the Deserted Medieval Village. A series of short-lived linear features, which are likely to represent seasonal variations in agricultural practices and re-modelling of features on an ad-hoc basis, were identified across the site with areas of continuous activity being located close to a subterranean building which may have been used to store produce, grown on the site. An assemblage of animal bone, pottery, flint and metal artefacts was recovered during the Strip, Map and Record. The pottery assemblage shows that the majority of activity on the site was taking place during the early Medieval period and continued through the Medieval period, peaking between the 12th to 14th centuries, declining from the 15th century onwards.
