Trial trenching assesses archaeological features in a planned development area, indicating potential history.
23 evaluation trenches measuring 50m x 2m were located using a Trimble GPS Rover. The trenches were positioned to assess anomalies highlighted in the results of the Geophysical Survey and also areas thought to be devoid of such features. Once positioned the trenches were excavated using a mechanical excavator, fitted with a wide toothless bucket operating under close archaeological supervision. In each trench, soils were removed down to perceived archaeological or natural horizons, whichever was encountered sooner. All subsequent excavation and recording was carried out in line with the approved Written Scheme of Investigation. Undated linear features recorded. No further archaeological work undertaken prior to development.
