Abstract Background: The Ashtavaidyas represent an ancient lineage of eighteen Brahmin physician families in Kerala, preserving over 2000 years of Ayurvedic knowledge through the Gurukula system. Among them, the Thrissur Thaikat Mooss family stands prominent, contributing significantly to clinical practice and literature. Objective: This article critically explores the life and contributions of Ashtavaidyan Thrissur Thaikat Narayanan Mooss, Ayurvedic physician, poet, and social reformer whose contributions left an everlasting mark on the medical and literary traditions of Kerala. Materials and Methods: An in-depth interview was conducted with present-generation members of the Thaikat Mooss family, supplemented by a comprehensive review and analysis of published literature, to document the contributions of Mooss. Results: Thrissur Thaikat Narayanan Mooss overcame several hardships to become one of the most admired Ashtavaidyas of his time. Mooss mastered Ayurveda under renowned masters, including Kuttancheri Aphan Mooss. His expertise gained widespread recognition, earning him honors from the Maharaja of Cochin and establishing his legacy beyond Kerala. Apart from his medical practice, Narayanan Mooss was also celebrated as a brilliant writer in Malayalam literature, composing notable works such as Yadavadanaveeyam, Kapotasandesham, and Sindooramanjari. Sindooramanjari is an important text on Ayurvedic pharmaceutics. The book carefully explains the preparation of fine powders (Sindooram) and also describes various methods to purify toxic metals and minerals. Despite his short lifespan of just 37 years, the influence of Narayanan Mooss was profound. His son, Unni Mooss, carried forward his legacy by establishing the Sree Narayana Ayurveda Oushadhasala in 1920. Conclusion: The life of Narayanan Mooss stands as a testament to resilience, dedication, and scholarly excellence, which enabled him to secure a place in the history of Kerala as a pioneering physician and poet.
