Abstract

• A systematic review of 190 studies on laser bed powder fusion-manufactured Inconel 718 alloy is presented. • The review discusses the effect of process parameters and heat treatment on LPBF-manufactured Inconel 718. • LPBF process parameters optimization significantly improves the performance of Inconel 718 alloy. • Post-heat treatment significantly enhanced the tensile properties, hardness, corrosion resistance, and oxidation performance of LPBF-manufactured IN718 parts. Inconel 718 (IN718) is a precipitation-strengthened nickel-based superalloy widely used in gas turbines, rocket engines, pressure vessels, and nuclear reactors due to its excellent high-temperature strength and corrosion resistance. The conventional manufacturing methods for IN718 alloy, such as forging and casting, are difficult for fabricating complex integral structure parts due to severe work hardening and high melting point. Laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) is an additive manufacturing (AM) technology that provides a feasible solution to overcome these limitations. The application of LPBF-manufactured Inconel 718 components has attracted increasing interest from both industry and academic researchers. The purpose of this article is to focus on the influence of process parameters and post-heat treatment on Inconel 718 alloy manufactured by LPBF. The optimization of process parameters plays a role in improving the performance of LPBF-manufactured IN718 parts. Microstructural studies reveal that the grain structure, and phases play a significant role in the mechanical properties of IN718 alloy. This review clarifies significant different between as-build and heat-treated IN718 parts. The post-heat treatment significantly improve the tensile strength, hardness, fatigue, creep, corrosion, wear, and oxidation performance of LPBF-manufactured Inconel 718 alloy. The topic presents the critical aspect of the LPBF Parts manufactured by Inconel 718 which can be guideline for manufacturer and academia in practical application.
