Absenteeism among students is still a challenge in higher education institutions, especially in professional programs where active participation in class is a key factor in the learning process. This paper examines the causes of absenteeism among college students and the effects of counselling on enhancing attendance and performance. The study employed a post-test only control group experimental design, where students were categorized into an experimental and control group. The experimental group was subjected to behavioural counselling interventions that included self-management strategies, while the control group did not receive counselling. The study employed validated questionnaires to gather data, which was analysed to establish differences in attendance and performance, including differences based on gender. The results showed that students who received counselling demonstrated a significant improvement in attendance and performance compared to those who did not receive counselling. The paper demonstrates the significance of organized counselling programs in dealing with absenteeism and improving performance in higher learning institutions.
