ABSTRACT Metro operators usually release disruption information via station announcements during unplanned service disruptions to guide stranded passengers in making decisions. However, few studies have explored how disruption information strategies influence travel choices of these passengers, and they often overlook the dynamics of travel choice behaviour under the influence of disruption information, thereby limiting the potential of disruption information to mitigate the negative impact of disruptions. This study aims to fill this gap by designing disruption information strategies during metro service disruptions and constructing a dynamic decision‐making process for stranded passengers. Further, we develop a dynamic discrete choice model that accounts for state dependence and serial correlation to explore the impact of disruption information strategies on passengers’ dynamic travel choice behaviour. Finally, a case study is conducted using survey data collected in Beijing, China. The results find that the expectation of waiting tolerance is approximately 13.14 min. Sensitivity analysis reveals that providing information about the duration and cause of disruptions increases the probability of passengers remaining on the original metro route by 11.30%, compared to situations where such information is not clearly communicated. A further analysis shows that under the fully clear information strategy, the probability of passengers with high waiting tolerance choosing the original metro route is 7.64% higher than those with low waiting tolerance. These findings offer valuable insights into the design of disruption information strategies during unplanned metro service disruptions.
