Key Points

  • To analyze the discovery of a copper alloy hoard and its implications for Oman’s archaeological history.
  • Examine artefacts uncovered during landscaping at Sultan Qaboos University campus.
  • Investigate the economic origins of the discovered hoard.
  • Contextualize findings within the timeline of the EIA and Magan period.
  • Uncovered 332 copper alloy EIA artefacts linked to tomb robbing.
  • Re-evaluation of the economic landscape of the EIA period in Oman.
  • The hoard overshadows previous perceptions of the metal-poor Magan period.

Abstract

In 2004 landscaping activities on the SQU university campus fortuitously brought to light a hoard of some 332 copper alloy EIA artefacts. This hoard has an economic origin as a tomb robbing cache. In the early days of archaeology in Oman, what was taken to be a rather metal-poor EIA now beyond doubt overshadows the putatively more prestigious Magan period.
