Advanced glycation end product (AGE) accumulation results from hyperglycaemia, oxidative stress, diet and reduced renal excretion. Skin autofluorescence (SAF) is closely correlated with skin AGE levels and the measurement of SAF has been identified as a non-invasive, simple marker of AGE accumulation. Catherine Johnson and Maarten Taal discuss the relevance of SAF to the renal community.
