Presents design criteria and opportunities for small-scale steel structures, highlighting unique challenges and solutions.
Small‐scale projects are often more complex and unique than larger projects. Their conditions include basis of structural design and loading, design and analysis requirements, usually conditioned by stability criteria (both global ‐overturning and slip‐, and local ‐buckling of elements and components‐) and SLS conditions (horizontal drift, vibration control), as well as importance of detail and connection design. Following these aspects, the paper presents several small‐scale projects, organised into three categories: furnishings and indoor structures; singular staircases; and canopies, pergolas and outdoor interventions. Altogether they highlight the main characteristics, criteria and design opportunities in this type of singular steel structures.
