Compares GWP values in steel products from LCA tools, suggesting EPDs are more reliable.
Sustainable construction requires materials with a low environmental impact. This study compares generic databases from Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) software and Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) regarding the Global Warming Potential (GWP) of the production phase of five steel products. Generic databases show significant discrepancies related to modelling assumptions. EPDs exhibit variability linked to production technology and regional context. Generic databases present higher average GWP values than EPDs, which reflect specific manufacturing practices. The results highlight the importance of greater transparency and the preferential use of EPDs in LCA studies.
