Evaluates anthelminthic effects of Tamarindus Indica extracts on earthworms, suggesting potential for natural treatments.
Some commonly occurring plants have anthelminthic activity. The leaves and bark of Tamarindus Indica was evaluated for anthelminthic activity using adult earthworms by using solvent extract of ethanol. There concentrations (5mg/ml, 10mg/ml, and 15mg/mg) of extract were studied in activity, which involved the determination of time of paralysis and death of the worm. The results were compared with albendazole as a positive control and normal saline as a negative control. Albendazole shows 100% effective on exposure, while worms exposed to normal saline are still alive even after 3 hours of exposure. Earthworms exposed to ethanolic extract of leaf and bark were paralysed and died proving the potency of Tamarindus Indica. Thus, Ethanol is more potent solvent extract. Finally, the extract show vermifuge and vermicidal action.
