Philological research uncovers historical context of the Wisdom of Solomon, reshaping its significance in antiquity.
For generations, scholarship has consigned the Book of the Wisdom of Solomon to the category ofHellenistic—or Alexandrian—pseudepigrapha, conventionally dated between c. 50 BCE and 50 CE, achronological vagueness that has functioned as an implicit dismissal of a text treated as discredited.Yet the present philological and historical research report uncovers a searing Eastern context thatrepositions the Book of Wisdom at the centre of a narrative struggle between Mark Antony andOctavian, the future Emperor Augustus. It thus constitutes the first rehabilitation from the mnemonicdamnation imposed since Actium (30 BCE)—a lapse of roughly 2,060 years. What follows is areconstruction of that context and of the argument that sustains it.
