Two x 15m Trench evaluation in Car Park to rear of former swimming pool site An archaeological evaluation (phase 2) was undertaken at the former Swimming Baths, Sansome Walk, Worcester (NGR SO 85023 55665). It was commissioned by Beech Grove Homes, a subsidiary of Sanctuary Group, in advance of a proposed residential redevelopment with associated infrastructure including roads, parking and landscaping. Planning permission has been granted subject to a programme of archaeological investigation. The site had been partially evaluated in 2020 with five trenches excavated in the central and western areas around the former building, with Roman features found in the south of the central area. The eastern end of site, currently used as a residents' car park was evaluated in this current stage of investigation, with two 15m trenches excavated. These revealed that the present car park construction had involved removal of the soils to the level of the natural deposits. A small pit of Roman date was excavated from which iron slag was recovered. Another possible feature was recorded in close proximity within the same trench and although undated was probably contemporary. These correlate with the three features recorded in the Phase 1 evaluation works adjacent. The Roman remains are of local significance and relate to research into the Roman iron industry in Worcester.
