This work demonstrates improved mechanical properties and lower viscosity in novel composites of SEBS and liquid crystals, highlighting their practical applications.
Styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene (SEBS) is a widely used thermoplastic elastomer known for its excellent elasticity and weather resistance. However, its relatively low stiffness at room temperature limits its suitability for structural applications, and its high melt viscosity poses challenges for processing and manufacturing. In this study, the novel SEBS/low-molar-mass liquid crystal (LLC) composites were prepared for the first time, aiming to simultaneously enhance the room-temperature modulus and lower the melt viscosity of SEBS. The thermal, rheological, and mechanical properties of the composites were systematically investigated. Results demonstrate that incorporating either type of LLC increases the stiffness of SEBS G1652 while reducing its melt viscosity, as intended. This work highlights the feasibility and advantages of blending LLCs to improve polymer performance.
