The selective alpha‐2 adrenergic agonist dexmedetomidine showed the most broadly effective results in preventing postoperative delirium in older adults in a systematic review and meta‐analysis comprising 18 randomized trials. Corticosteroids were the only treatments found to reduce delirium severity.
