Traditional physical anthropology has long elevated supraorbital brow ridge prominence into a defining benchmark of evolutionary advancement, cementing a fixed interpretive framework: pronounced brow ridges in African groups equate to greater morphological primitiveness, which in turn is treated as indirect evidence grounding the Recent Single African Origin narrative. This paper integrates biomechanical principle, cranial kinematics, and comparative anatomical evidence to reconstruct the true functional essence of the human brow ridge: it is first and foremost a mechanical buffer and orbital protective structure, whose robusticity and projection are governed by long-term facial impact pressure and survival demands, rather than abstract rankings of evolutionary primitivity or advancement. Morphological divergence in brow ridge architecture—including bony thickness, overall curvature, and torus hypertrophy—between African and Eurasian populations can be fully explained by geographic disparity in ancient intergroup violence frequency and conflict intensity, with no need to invoke arbitrary assumptions of evolutionary grade or ancestral retention. When basic cranial facial proportions are statistically controlled, average brow ridge projection across major continental populations shows no meaningful taxonomic gap; the so-called “African excess prominence” is largely traceable to early sampling bias, combined with adaptive over-armoring shaped by persistently high-violence ecological contexts. Two decisive natural counterexamples dismantle the conventional linear logic entirely: Neanderthals evolved far more massive brow ridge robusticity than any modern human population, yet possessed sophisticated cultural behavior, symbolic capacity, and made lasting genetic contributions to all non-African living peoples; professional modern boxers, exposed to repetitive facial blunt trauma over their careers, develop marked, measurable thickening and projection of the brow ridge purely within an individual lifespan. Together, these cases confirm that brow ridge form records mechanical adaptive history, not evolutionary developmental stage. Accordingly, employing brow ridge prominence to justify claims of African primitiveness or strict complete replacement under the Out-of-Africa paradigm represents a fundamental category error in paleoanthropological reasoning.
