Accommodative esotropia with onset prior to 12 months of age: a case series

Introduction Refractive accommodative esotropia is a strabismus associated with uncorrected hyperopia. Visual outcome in patients with accommodative esotropia can be excellent if treatment of the full cycloplegic hyperopic refractive error is initiated soon after the deviation presents. Case Report This case series describes 3 patients with accommodative esotropia with onset before the age of 12 months, important clinical characteristics of the strabismus, treatment options, and long-term prognosis of patients who have this condition from infancy. Conclusion Early treatment is the key to achieving the long-term goals of good binocular vision and eliminating amblyopia. However, practitioners should also be mindful that even with the most compliant patients, bifoveality may not be achievable, and alignment to microesotropia may be the ideal patient outcome.
