Abstract Jean Martin Charcot (1825–1893) was an enthusiast of hydrotherapy for the alleviation of neurological symptoms. At the Salpêtrière hospital, he frequently advised the use of a high-pressure shower, which delivered strong pulsing jets of cold water. This therapy gained particular popularity in Russia, where it remains widely used and is known as the Charcot shower treatment.
