Abstract

Temu giring (Curcuma heyneana Valeton & Zijp) is a traditional medicinal plant widely used in Indonesia, especially in traditional medicine. However, it has many benefits, especially in health and pharmacy, including its potential as an antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, and other uses. However, its contribution to the production of traditional medicine is relatively low. The drying process of medicinal plants as raw materials for traditional medicine impacts the quality of the active ingredient compounds. This study used three variations of sun drying: wind drying, and oven drying. All simplicia were extracted by maceration, soxhletation, ultrasound-assisted extraction, magnetic stirrer-assisted extraction, and homogenizer-assisted extraction. The extract was tested for total phenolic and flavonoid levels using the colorimetric method and continued with FRAP antioxidants. HPLC identified the extract with the highest phenolic content with a curcumin comparator. The highest phenolic and flavonoid levels were found in the extract dried by oven soxhletation 26.055 ± 1.442 mgGAE/g extract and 11.721 ± 0.162 mgQE/g extract. The extract with the best antioxidant activity was dried in the oven, and ultrasound-assisted extraction was 156.990 ± 3.303 Mol/gram. The HPLC chromatograms of the soxhletation extracts (oven-dried) showed a retention time of curcuminoids close to the standard. Variations in drying and extraction methods significantly impact the levels of chemical compounds, especially compounds that play a role in antioxidant activity.
