Key Points

  • To address the semantic challenges of defining division by zero and propose a new interpretation.
  • Analyzing conflicting observations regarding division by zero.
  • Proposing an alternative interpretation within the complex plane.
  • Constructing a consistent semantic framework.
  • Arrives at a new definition of division by zero as equivalent to multiplication by zero.
  • Demonstrates that misunderstandings stem from semantic issues.

Abstract

This short thesis reconciles the conflicting observations that arise from attempting to address division by zero in different ways, by proposing an alternative interpretation of the complex plane, and argues that the problem with defining division by zero is fundamentally semantic, arriving at a consistent framework in which division by zero is defined as equivalent to multiplication by zero.
