Explores historical geodetic mapping and measurement techniques in the Qin and Han eras, suggesting advanced skills in this field.
In No. 1 tomb at Fangmatan (放马滩) were found large wooden ruler, calculating chips and maps, linking together measurement, calculation and cartography. The ruler can be used as rectangular ruler. According to the wangyuan (望远, looking into the distance) and lisibiao (立四表, set four poles) questions in Chinese mathematical texts, measurement calculations can be accomplished using the gougu ratio. The occupant of No. 1 tomb had most likely been involved in calculations and map-making skills passed down in the region of Fangmatan, and was capable of calculations and geodetic mapping.
