Review synthesizes guidelines for pharmacological management of agitation in dementia populations, indicating critical care points for nurse practitioners.
Abstract Dementia is an increasingly prevalent condition, with approximately 10 million people globally newly diagnosed each year. It encompasses several conditions leading to a gradual decline in memory, reasoning, language, behavior, and the ability to perform everyday activities. Alzheimer's dementia accounts for approximately 50% to 70% of cases, followed by vascular dementia, Lewy body dementia, and frontotemporal dementia. Behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia, including agitation, are noncognitive symptoms that significantly impact disease burden. This review synthesizes current evidence and guideline recommendations to support nurse practitioners in the pharmacologic management of agitation in dementia.
