The intellectual development of urban economics is traced from its early roots in the writings of Smith and Marshall through to Krugman's economic geography. Institutional developments are also considered with journal development and expansion reflecting the increasing maturity and internationalization of the discipline. The paper concludes with an assessment of the impact of urban economics on private and public sector property professionals in the UK. E VANS A. W. Die akademische Entwicklungsgeschichte der städtischen Wirtschaftswissenschaft wird von ihren ersten Anfängen in den Schriften von Smith und Marshall bis zu Krugmans Wirtschaftsgeographie aufgezeichnet. Zugleich werden auch institutionelle Entwicklungen beachtet, die Entwicklung und Erweiterung von Zeitschriften, zunehmende Reife und Internationalisierung des Fachgebiets widerspiegeln. Der Aufsatz schließt mit einer Beurteilung der Auswirkung der städtischen Wirtschaftswissenschaft auf Immobilienfachleute des privaten und des ö ffentlichen Sektors im UK.
