Two types of light confining cavities containing GaAs and Si cells for spectrum-splitting operation are analyzed. The first type is based on the spatial confinement of light, while the second one uses angular confinement as well (elliptic cavities). It is shown that both concepts lead to a potential cavity efficiency of around 33-34% with good but realistic cells. However, the elliptic cavity is preferred because it does not require very small entry apertures illuminated at strong irradiances. Minor, practical modifications of the cavity are also suggested by the analysis.
