†‡ § The LENS XX expansion tunnel in its first use is employed to perform fundamental shock tube measurements of the emission of light behind a shock front traveling in excess of 10 km/s. The LENS XX facility is a large expansion tunnel with a heated 10,000 psi hydrogen driver. The driver, expansion and accelerator tubes are 24 inches in diameter. For the shock front measurements an integral three foot in length test cell with eight optical ports is installed before the contoured nozzle. The test cell allows access to the light from the high speed shock front.
