The article considers the formation and development of functional zones of extracurricular activities in the architectural and planning structure of educational buildings of the Russian general education system. Special emphasis is placed on the role of the extracurricular activity function, which has largely determined the current typology of school buildings. The research focuses on the creation of a material and technical base for the organization and conduct of extracurricular activities and its role in the architectural and planning structure of a school building throughout the history of the formation of the Russian general education system. The development of functional zones at different historical stages is analyzed, and a steady trend of expanding extracurricular functions in the structure of modern school buildings is revealed. Today, Russian society has formed a request for general education organizations operating in the modern "full-time school" model, in which extracurricular activities play a decisive dominant role, but currently the implementation of this request is poorly supported by the existing material and technical base, functional and architectural planning structure of existing school buildings. Based on the conducted comprehensive research, the author makes a forecast for the further development of the architectural typology of modern school buildings. As a possible direction for discussion, a proposal is being made to create multifunctional full-day educational complexes with additional functional blocks combining extracurricular activities and additional education for preschoolers, schoolchildren and adult participants in educational communities.
