THE principle of mass continuity was used to de-velop equations to predict the rate of advance of a sediment deposition front in a grass filter under steady state flow conditions. Based on the theoretical analysis, it is shown that the rate of advance is proportional to the square root of elapsed time until the depth of deposition reaches the grass height and then linearly proportional to elapsed time. The validity of the equa-tions was evaluated in cylindrical and flat bladed arti-ficial media using homogeneous sediment. The agree-ment between predicted and observed values was excellent.
