This visual essay considers the rise of corporate-driven standardization of typefaces on public signage, predominantly in parts of Western Europe. While readability is cited as the main reason for the homogenization of typography, examples of earlier typefaces demonstrate not only the adequacy and perfect legibility of most of them, but also their link with different regions' heritage and identity. Recent developments in the digital media and young designers' creative approaches give some hope for the preservation of the older forms and emergence of more varied and imaginative typefaces.
