Theoretical research highlights libraries' role in promoting news literacy and countering misinformation.
This paper is a theoretical research on the role of libraries as news literacy centres in combating fake news in the digital age. Libraries, as long-standing institutions dedicated to information and literacy, are ideally suited to serve as news literacy hubs. Libraries are crucial in countering fake news and promoting news literacy by providing access to trustworthy information, equipping individuals with critical thinking skills, and fostering a passion for reading. In an age where internet access and social media usage are on the rise, the issue of fake news has become widespread. The paper emphasized that engaging with information specialists, looking beyond headlines, avoiding unverified information, scrutinizing evidence, and being cautious of manipulated images are some effective strategies for identifying fake news. Limited internet connectivity, outdated infrastructure, and insufficient ICT resources hinder libraries' ability to provide effective digital literacy services, presenting significant challenges for Nigerian libraries in their efforts to combat fake news in the digital era. The paper concludes that strengthening libraries capacity to serve as news literacy hubs is essential for promoting informed citizenship and curbing misinformation in the digital environment.
