This theoretical framework examines time's nature in quantum and gravitational contexts, suggesting a shared boundary for unification.
This paper develops what time is by observation; the companion paper, The Shape of Spacetime (Chilton, forthcoming, end of May 2026 prepublication), develops what time is by construction. The two papers form one structural picture in two halves. This paper takes up two questions that have lived alongside each other for a century without quite meeting. The first is what time actually is. The second is why quantum mechanics and general relativity have resisted a single account despite a long and serious effort. The present paper develops one structural answer to both. Time is the operation by which configurations cross from the room where they are admissible-pending into the room where they are instantiated, at the boundary this framework names the NOW. There are two rooms, the PAST and the FUTURE, and there is no third. Quantum mechanics describes the FUTURE room with extraordinary precision because that room contains candidate fields and phase relationships among admissible configurations. General relativity describes the PAST room with comparable precision because that room contains the curvature accumulated under mass-energy that has crossed. On this reading, the apparent conflict between quantum mechanics and general relativity is not a failure of either theory within its successful domain, but a category error produced by asking the calculi of two structurally distinct rooms to close on one substrate. Their unification is the recognition that they share a boundary rather than a domain. The unification claimed in this paper is structural: the recognition that quantum mechanics and general relativity describe two structurally distinct rooms sharing a boundary, with the calculi of the two theories operating in their successful domains and meeting at the contact rather than competing for the same substrate. The algebraic completion of the unification, including the formal expression of the Wick rotation at the boundary, the resolution of the imaginary unit at contact, and the relationship between the candidate field's phase structure and the past room's metric signature, is developed in The Shape of Spacetime, the next paper in the Q Conjecture (Chilton, forthcoming). The present paper commits the structural framework on which that algebraic completion runs. This paper inherits two prior commitments. The Shape of Reality (Chilton 2026a) committed existence by shape, the recursion Q = ΣQᵢ | S, and the four-set partition of configurations into A, B, C, and D, with Set E as the descriptive layer. The Truth of Shape (Chilton 2026b) committed the Simultaneous Exclusion Principle, the Chilton Form as the structural form of measurement-mediated approach to Q, the substrate bifurcation between Physical Reality and Non-Physical Reality, and the joint asymptotic terminal of the truth-tracking chain at ℝ (Truth's notation for Reality, distinct from the real numbers the symbol conventionally names). Shape led to Truth; Truth led here. The present paper opens the keystone Truth committed at §4.5, that out there is back then, into the temporal architecture proper. It commits one new structural fact: the NOW is a literal shared boundary between two structurally distinct rooms, with no width, with one Planck unit of door swing on each side, and with the boundary advance at every tick producing the temporal structure in which every observer has always operated.
