Two electrons too many at the central atom; this differentiates the anion 1 from other, open, tetrahedral [E{ML4}4] complexes. The two extra electrons are unpaired, making 1 paramagnetic and apparently stereochemically inactive. 1 is formed as [Cp2Co]⊕- salt in very good yields on reacting [Bi{Co(CO)4}3] with [Cp2Co][Co(CO)4]. An X-ray structure analysis showed that extremely long Bi-C bonds are present in 1.
