For [001]- and [011]-oriented pure NaCl single crystals the total dislocation density ϱtot and the densities of the primary (ϱp), the orthogonal (ϱo), and the remaining dislocations (ϱr) are determined as a function of the flow stress τ. The total dislocation density varies according to {article}{empty}{document}τ = α Gb√ ρ tot{document} with α = 0.35 (G shear modulus, b dislocation strength) and corroborates the functional dependence deduced earlier from etch pit and X-ray measurements. In stage II and III of the work-hardening curve ϱtot and the densities ϱp, ϱo, ϱr appear not to depend on orientation. Stage II of the work-hardening curve is characterized by a rapid increase of the secondary dislocation density ϱr, which can be approximated by a square root law with α ≈︁ 0.37. By contrast, the primary density increases almost linearly with flow stress. Orthogonal dislocations first start to multiply after some stage II deformation.
