Narrative review shows improved balance and pain relief in pes planus using kinesio taping and foot orthotic devices, indicating a need for combined strategies.
Background: Pes planus is a common musculoskeletal condition characterized by collapse of the medial longitudinal arch, altered biomechanics, pain, reduced balance, and functional limitations. Conservative rehabilitation strategies such as kinesio taping (KT) and foot orthotic (FO) devices are frequently used to manage symptoms and improve foot mechanics. Objective: To narratively evaluate current evidence regarding the individual and combined roles of kinesio taping and foot orthotic devices in the rehabilitation of pes planus. Methods: A narrative review of literature published between 2015 and 2026 was conducted using PubMed, Google Scholar, and related databases. Relevant studies examining kinesio taping, foot orthoses, and combined interventions in children, adolescents, and adults with pes planus were reviewed. Studies focusing on pain, balance, gait, plantar pressure, and biomechanical correction were synthesized. Results: Kinesio taping demonstrated short-term improvements in pain reduction, proprioception, and dynamic balance, particularly in symptomatic flexible pes planus. Foot orthotic devices showed stronger long-term benefits through correction of foot alignment, redistribution of plantar pressure, and biomechanical support. Combined interventions involving orthoses with strengthening exercises or kinesio taping appeared to provide superior functional outcomes compared to isolated interventions. Conclusion: Current evidence suggests that KT may serve as an effective short-term adjunct for symptom relief, while FO devices remain essential for long-term biomechanical correction. A multimodal rehabilitation approach integrating kinesio taping, orthotic support, and therapeutic exercise may offer optimal outcomes in pes planus management. Further randomized controlled studies are required to establish standardized combined treatment protocols.
