Novel method calculates surface currents in submesoscale ocean eddies, indicating strong potential for detailed investigations.
A novel method is proposed to calculate the surface current fields of submesoscale eddies accurately. Using the C-Band Doppler (CDOP) model, we first invert preprocessed SAR images to get one-dimensional radial velocity (RVL). Then we improved the Burgers–Rott vortex Model/Stuart vortex solution, and compute the two-dimensional flow field. With this method, the current derived from SAR data became useful with ultra-high resolution, extensive spatial coverage, and immunity to cloud interference. This method is significantly potential for investigating detailed current structures of submesoscale eddies.
