Public awareness of noise exposure is growing, whether it’s a smartwatch alert at a concert or the dull ache in one’s ears after mowing the lawn. Yet despite this awareness, few tools exist to help individuals take protection action. Hazardous noise remains a widespread, but underrecognized public health concern. Meanwhile, hearing science often presents complex, technical information that is difficult for non-specialists to interpret and apply. This presentation introduces the Hearing Protection Optimization Tool (HPOT), a user-friendly software platform designed to support evidence-based Hearing Protection Device (HPD) selection. HPOT combines advanced acoustic laboratory testing with algorithmic analysis to evaluate HPD’s benefits and potential performance limitations. It translates complex acoustic and psychoacoustic concepts, such as insertion loss, distortion effects, and signal quality, into intuitive visualizations and scenario specific guidance. We position HPOT as a bridge between acoustic science and everyday decision making. By helping users understand their acoustic environment and protection options, HPOT empowers people to take informed steps toward hearing conservation. This talk will showcase HPOT’s functionality, explore how science can translate to real world action, and highlight how acoustic experts and the community can come together to create solutions to the most complex protection challenges.
