Analyzes sonic boom metrics in a fine-resolution microphone array, suggesting impacts from weather and turbulence.
In preparation for the planned NASA Quesst Mission Phase 2 acoustic validation flights of the X-59 aircraft, NASA conducted a dry run flight test with F-15 aircraft. During the test, a ground-based, 2-D microphone array, ARray Instrumentation for Sonic Thump Observations in TurbuLEnce (ARISTOTLE), was used to measure 19 sonic booms. The array consists of 61 microphones with 25 and 50 ft spacing, over a total 1000 ft × 1000 ft aperture. The variability of human perception-based metrics across the array is analyzed and related to weather and turbulence measurements. [Work supported through a NASA Graduate Research Fellowship.]
