Abstract

The student chapter of ASA at Penn State has a very active outreach program where community members of all ages learn about acoustics through engaging and interactive demonstrations. The ASA students frequently travel to local schools and set up a variety of acoustic instrumentation, catering to whichever age group is there at that time. To present a few types of demonstrations at the Acoustics Demo Session in Honolulu, PSU ASA will be bringing a Chladni Plate setup where attendees can see the nodes and antinodes of differently shaped plates when excited at various frequencies as well as a Soundlazer parametric ultrasonic speaker that will display focused sound beams and exhibit how sound waves interact with objects. As a hands-on activity typically completed by children, there will also be supplies for attendees to create their own box guitars and popsicle stick harmonicas. These demonstrations provide a brief glimpse into the outreach events that Penn State ASA typically participates in.
