This article is a critique of Herlihy and Klapisch-Zubers book Les Toscans et Leurs Familles [Tuscans and Their Families] which is a historical demographic study based on the Florentine catasto of 1427. The political and cultural implications of the book are discussed. (ANNOTATION)
