In addition to reducing overdiagnosis of thyroid cancer, we need to reduce overtreatment. As compared with total thyroidectomy, thyroid lobectomy carries fewer risks and preserves thyroid tissue, often obviating the need for permanent thyroid hormone–replacement therapy.
