The influence of low water concentrations on the formation of zinc metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) is investigated using zinc nitrate and triflate salts. Three unique MOF phases are obtained by altering the water content with terephthalic acid. This work underscores the role of water content as a critical parameter in directing MOF phase and μ4-oxo formation. Furthermore, this study introduces oxygen atom transfer agents as a new synthetic variable capable of circumventing the dependence on water to achieve the μ4-oxo MOF phase. Finally, the use of zinc triflate is demonstrated to offer an additional advantage relative to nitrate salts by eliminating carcinogenic nitrosamine byproducts typically encountered during MOF synthesis.
