The fundamental lesion in more than 95% of all cases of CHD is coronary atherosclerosis. This is always a local manifestation of a generalized disease, a universal process that occurs in most humans. It begins in early childhood as fatty streaks and develops into progressive atheroma from the time of adolescence (Figure 1).
