New species Wongia nujiangensis is introduced in a biodiversity study of freshwater fungi in Yunnan, highlighting its ecological role.
Lignicolous freshwater fungi, which colonize submerged decaying woody substrates in freshwater habitats, play vital roles in nutrient cycling, carbon turnover, and ecosystem functioning. Yunnan Province is one of the fungal diversity research hotspots, with numerous studies focusing on lignicolous freshwater fungi conducted in this region. During an ongoing investigation of diversity of lignicolous freshwater fungi in the Nujiang River basin, China, two Wongia species were collected and examined. Based on morphological characteristics and multigene phylogenetic analyses of combined ITS, LSU, rpb 2, SSU and tef 1‐α sequence data, a new species, Wongia nujiangensis sp. nov. is introduced, and a previously described species, W. bambusae is also identified. Comprehensive morphological descriptions, phylogenetic evidence, and microphotographs are provided to support their taxonomic placement and to enhance understanding of the diversity and distribution of Wongia .
