Abstract

The geophysical survey consisted of a detailed gradiometer survey of as much of the development area as was suitable, extending to approximately 4.5ha. The survey was undertaken in a series of 30m grids across the site. The western part of the site was surveyed on Thursday 14th August, with the rest of the site surveyed on Tuesday 30th September after that area had been harrowed. The survey has identified a likely former field boundary pre-dating the historic OS maps, with areas of ridge and furrow cultivation on slightly different alignments to the north and south of this feature. There was also a possible enclosure feature close to the northeast corner of the site, although this may represent modern drainage or a cultivation trend. The survey also revealed a large number of modern land drains and a few likely tractor tracks across the site. Approximately 1.6ha of the site was not suitable for surveying as it was a 'set aside' area.
