This study examines the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in academic writing – with particular attention to article summarisation, proofreading, citation management and plagiarism detection – and explores how AI can enhance reading comprehension as well as future trends in AI-assisted writing in higher education. A mixed-methods approach was used with a survey of 405 participants from higher education institutions in the Gulf region. The quantitative data were analysed using partial least squares structural equation modelling. AI-assisted summarisation was found to significantly enhance reading comprehension, and AI-driven proofreading was found to enhance the quality of paraphrasing. Effective paraphrasing also contributed to robust plagiarism detection mechanisms, thus strengthening academic integrity. However, AI citation management had a limited influence on writing development, reflecting continued reliance on conventional tools, but AI-powered presentation design appears to be exerting an effect on future writing trends by improving data visualisation and knowledge dissemination. We propose a solution-oriented algorithm for AI integration based on academic level, technical proficiency, learning style, institution type, AI policy orientation and teaching assessment methodologies.
