Many applications would benefit from graphical simulation and emerging virtual environment (VE) technologies, and for many of these cases, the VE system must be able to display accurate models of human figures. The author surveys major modeling techniques for representing and simulating synthetic humans, or virtual actors, and discusses the relative importance of these simulation and modeling techniques for various VE applications.< <ETX xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">></ETX>
