Assistant Professor Bo-Nian Chen of Chung Yuan Christian University, Taiwan, envisions a future in which artificial intelligence (AI) and humankind coexist harmoniously and collaborate to address global challenges. His interdisciplinary research bridges AI, quantum computing and bioinformatics, integrating these fields to develop intelligent, ethical and practical technologies. Chen’s current National Science and Technology Council (NSTC)-funded projects focus on the innovative applications of computer Chinese chess and AI-assisted learning. By employing reinforcement learning, deep neural networks and generative AI, his research aims to create adaptive educational systems that enhance both AI performance and human learning through strategic gameplay. Beyond gaming, these systems have potential applications in vocational training and cognitive skill development. Chen also explores the synergy between AI and quantum computing to optimise complex systems, model nature’s quantum properties and accelerate research in bioinformatics, including non-invasive therapies and toxicology studies using machine learning. His vision extends to developing Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) capable of collaborating peacefully with humans, fostering technological progress while upholding ethical responsibility. Through open-source platforms and interdisciplinary collaboration, Chen seeks to make AI research more accessible and impactful across diverse domains. Ultimately, his work represents a forward-looking paradigm for AI development—one that harmonises human and artificial intelligence to promote wellbeing, innovation and sustainable technological advancement.
