Three patients with pseudohypoparathyroidism and coexisting thyroid dysfunction were studied. In one, hypothyroidism was associated with detectable thyrotropin and a normal response to thyrotropin-releasing hormone. In the other two cases, a mother and daughter who were clinically euthyroid, there was high basal concentration of thyrotropin in plasma. The mother was tested with TRH and showed an exaggerated response of TSH secretion as seen in primary hypothyroidism. Thyroid dysfunction in pseudohypoparathyroidism may reflect defects at the level of the hypothalamus or higher in some cases and in the thyroid itself in other cases.
