This research aims to evaluate the biocompatibility and inflammatory responses of various synthetic polymers when implanted in coronary arteries.
Experimental placement of five biodegradable and three nonbiodegradable polymers in porcine coronary arteries (2.5-3.0 mm diameter).
Stent patency was assessed via angiography and microscopic examination four weeks post-implantation.
Inflammatory responses were quantified by measuring the thickness of the tissue response.
Biodegradable PCL, PHBV, and POE and nonbiodegradable PUR and SIL caused extensive inflammatory responses (thickness: 0.79 mm, 1.12 mm, 2.36 mm, 1.24 mm, and 1.43 mm, respectively).
Milder inflammation was noted in biodegradable PGLA and PEO/PBTP (0.46 mm, 0.61 mm) and nonbiodegradable PETP (0.46 mm).
Neointimal thickening was induced unexpectedly, illustrating limitations of in vitro tests.
