A survey of the various relaxation methods for the study of rapid reactions in solution is presented Vgl. hierzu auch: M. Eigen, “Chemische Relaxation”‐Verlag Dr. D. Steinkopff, Darmstadt, in Vorbereitung. . Changes in pressure, temperature, and electric field may be employed to change the position of equilibrium. The relaxation is observed either directly as a transient process (jump methods) or is derived from the response of the system undergoing periodical changes (dispersion and absorption methods). Combination of the various methods discussed, allows the measurement of relaxation times from 1 sec to 5 · 10 −10 sec. Limitations and possible applications of the method are discussed.
